Like any other camcorder, the more light you have, the better the picture quality will be. With the GZ-MS130, you have two options: You can set the shutter speed manually, and select a slower shutter to add more brightness. Setting the shutter to 1/15th of a second will let you record a brighter image in very low light than what you can see with your own eyes. If you use a slower shutter, keep in mind that it will add some motion blur. Alternately, you can turn on the video light. If you truly want to record in total darkness, you will not get a very good picture.

All cameras can take good pictures & video at a distance. The question is how much detail you need. If high levels of detail are important, you might want to consider one of the high definition models from JVC. The GZ-MS130 is a standard definition model. The GZ-HM200 & GZ-HD300 are two similar high definition models. Also, please note that while there are no limitations on distance for video, there can definitely be limitations on picking up sound from a distance, if that is important to you.

The digital stills on your camera are approximately VGA resolution using a .8MP Sensor. That means they are best for e-mail applications or posting on a web site. For printing, the new JVC GZ-X900, or GZ-HM400 would be a much better choice. They both offer true 9MP Digital Stills.

No, you cannot do that with the GZ-MS130. But, you can do that with the GZ-MG670, which has a selectable analog A/V input.
