Absolutely. Just make sure your Apple has an Intel processor, which is required to handle AVCHD video. Then connect via USB and it will work fine.

For a Windows computer, Pinnacle Studio 14 or Adobe Premiere Elements are excellent choices. For Apple, iMovie '08 or iMovie '09 both work excellent.

Your Everio makes videos in the AVCHD format. These will work with any Mac computer that has an Intel processor. You connect the camcorder to the Mac via USB. Then, you can import and edit your videos if you have iMovie '08 or iMovie '09. From there, you can share them in a wide variety of formats. You can also import and edit your video with the newer versions of Final Cut Pro.

The GZ-HD320 has a 20X Optical Zoom. It covers a range from wide angle to full telephoto. The focal length at full telephoto is 58mm, which is equivalent to an 828mm lens on a traditional 35mm (or full frame D-SLR). If you need more telephoto, aftermarket lens extenders are available. Just make sure you look for one that is compatible with a 30.5mm lens thread.

A wide range of software can do this. The new Pinnacle Studio 14 is a good example. It seems to be very reliable, and allows you to convert to a wide variety of file formats. In order for it to run smoothly, you do need a powerful PC (Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66Ghz recommended, with appropriate RAM & Graphics). Keep in mind that more and more devices are being introduced that support AVCHD natively, so conversion is not your only option. You may want to check for updates to your current media server, or compare the cost of a new media server that does support AVCHD vs. the cost and time involved in conversion.

Question
Can I update (GZ-HD3U) software?
This camera will not allow the use of mac os x 10.5.8 to assemble/make movies. I need to update the camera software to use my wife's mac leopard to compose/make/use CDs. I currently use mac os x 10.4 to do what I need to do, but I believe it would do better with 5.8.

The GZ-HD3 should work about the same with any recent Mac OS. If you are using USB to get your video into your Mac, and you are using the JVC CD-ROM "Quick Time Plug in for Everio"--and you upgrade to 10.5.8--you will also need to use the update which JVC has posted here: http://www2.cli.co.jp/products/ne/update_qtc_for_gzhd7/qtc3e_update.htm. Alternately you can record in the 1440CBR mode, which lets you use the Firewire connection to your Mac, and does not require any plug-in software from JVC. More information on that can be found at: http://support.jvc.com/consumer/support/support.jsp?pageID=1&item=19#276

The GZ-HD320 records in the AVCHD format. This is supported by iMovie '08 and iMovie '09 as well as by Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 or higher. You need to make sure you are using one of those software programs for editing with your Mac and you should be fine. There is no Quick Time plug in necessary with any of these programs.

You can push the snapshot button during video recording to capture a digital still. The GZ-HD320 does offer a 20X optical zoom, which is currently the best optical zoom of any consumer HD camera.
